So, why Mars?

I’m a longtime fan of Bruce Springsteen. Lyrics from “Wild Billy’s Circus Story” were among the first to stick with me. In the song, the human cannonball is being blasted out of his cannon, and he’s headed for Mars. In these lines, the Boss conveys the sights and sounds of the circus while also relaying the plight of the human cannonball, who may or may not be in trouble.

To say the human cannonball was headed for Mars rather than the stars always struck me as a creative way to say he’s going places, even if he misses his fall this one time. My takeaway: You’ll fall down, but that doesn’t mean you won’t make it to Mars.

“Some people shoot for the stars; I’m aiming for Mars. A long way to go but closer to home.”
